Introduction
Johnny Clegg was born in the UK and grew up in Zimbabwe. He joined forces with Sipho Mchunu (from Natal) and in 1976 they had their first hit single Woza Friday. Their first Album, Universal Men was released in 1979. Juluka was formed during a time of much racial conflict in the South African Apartheid era, and many of their songs convey this. African Litany was released in 1981, and in 1985 Juluka split up. Sipho went back to Zululand, and Johnny formed Savuka. The Savuka albums included Shadow Man and Cruel, Crazy Beautiful World. Savuka ended in 1993, and Johnny and Sipho reformed to record Ya Vuka Inkunzi (also released as Crocodile Love). Since then, Johnny has recorded solo including his latest album New World Survivor. |
